Democrats twice lose seat targeted after 2016 map redraw

GAINESVILLE -- Republican Keith Perry retained his District 8 senate seat, holding off Dr. Kayser Enneking in a race targeted by Democrats hoping to change the majority in Florida’s Senate.

Perry defeated Enneking by just over 2,300 votes, 49.5 percent to 48.4 percent. Charles Goston, loser in a May Gainesville Commission runoff election, garnered 4,277 votes, about 2.1 percent, as a non-partisan candidate.

Senate District 8 covers Alachua and Putnam counties, and the northern half of Marion County.  The district became more favorable to Democrats after the state’s Senate map was redrawn before the 2016 election.  Perry now has won two campaigns against well-funded opponents.
