Overtime for Florida Legislative Session budget vote

Deal reached, should be voted on Monday

TALLAHASSEE (by Rick Flagg/FLA. NEWS NETWORK) -- Florida lawmakers finally have a deal on their new budget for the state, but Senate President Joe Negron of Palm City says they'll have to go into overtime to finish the job.

"Our goal is to have the budget on members' desks on Friday," he said. "And the plan is to reconvene at 1 pm on Monday for consideration of the budget and budget bills."

The legislative session is scheduled to end at midnight Friday, so Negron says they'll have to pass formal resolutions in both chambers extending the session.

If all goes as planned, they'll approve the new budget Monday afternoon and call it quits by the end of the day.

Lawmakers can't look at the bill and pass it on the same day because legislation mandates a 72 hour "cooling off period."

That 72-hour period is meant to give lawmakers the chance to look over the entire budget before they vote on it.
