GAINESVILLE -- Todd Chase, a former member of the Gainesville City Commission, becomes the eighth Republican to enter the race for Florida’s 3rd Congressional District seat now held by the retiring Ted Yoho.

Chase, a businessman who served as a commander in the Navy, made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Despite Gainesville being solidly Democratic, Chase served on the Gainesville City Commission from 2011-2017.

In early December, Yoho announced he would honor a campaign pledge and retire after his fourth congressional term. A long list of Republicans have entered this summer’s GOP Primary, including Kat Cammack, Kent Guinn, Joe Millado, Gavin Rollins, Judson Sapp, James St. George and Amy Pope Wells.

Four Democrats are also running in the traditionally GOP leaning district.

Florida’s 3rd Congressional District covers Alachua, Bradford, Clay, Putnam and Union counties and part of Marion County.
